Primary to Secondary
Pilot Project
Overview
The transition from primary to secondary education is a significant phase for young people and their families that involve not only a change in the schooling environment but also adjustments in friendships, peer groups, and increased responsibility for academic outcomes. These changes can impact both mental health and academic achievement. Factors that promote a successful transition include:
- Positive friendships that create belonging
- School connectedness
- Educator support
- Parents who are equipped to support the transition phase and beyond with accurate knowledge and current information
This project is a one-year pilot commencing January 2025 and involves three secondary colleges in the region. The pilot will involve mapping current success and potential new inclusions to enhance practice, together with facilitated workshops with parents of Year 6 and Year 7 students, aimed at providing new information, clarifying understanding, making known the important school contacts and discussing other critical factors.
The project is being independently evaluated by Monash University.
